CarPlay Screens & Stereos

14 of 14 products

Two different products get sold under the same search terms here, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this category.

A portable CarPlay screen sits on the dash or windscreen, powers from the accessory socket, and mirrors your phone. Nothing gets wired into the car. It takes ten minutes and you can move it between vehicles. The screen is not touch responsive in the way a built in unit is, audio usually goes over an FM transmitter or Bluetooth to the car stereo, and there is a wire trailing across the dash no matter how carefully you route it.

A head unit replaces the factory radio in the dashboard. Better sound path, proper integration, no wires visible. It also needs a fitting kit, a wiring harness, and often a steering wheel control adapter specific to your car. Budget for those separately, or for an installer.

If you go portable

Check what the screen does about audio. FM transmission is the fallback and it sounds like FM. Bluetooth to the car stereo is better if your car already has it. A wired AUX output is best and increasingly rare.

Screen size is less important than mounting. A 9 inch screen on a suction mount will vibrate on rough roads and eventually fall off in summer heat. Look for a weighted dash base or a vent clip rated for the weight.

Wireless CarPlay drains phone battery fast. Plan on keeping a charge cable in the car regardless of what the listing says about convenience.

If you go head unit

Measure before you buy. Single DIN and double DIN describe the opening size, and plenty of cars use neither without an adapter. Look up your exact model and year on a fitting guide before ordering anything.

Check whether your car routes chimes, parking sensors or climate display through the factory radio. On a lot of cars from about 2014 onward it does, and replacing the head unit means losing those unless you add an interface module.

Backup cameras

Most units in this category bundle one. Bundled cameras are usually low resolution with poor low light performance, which is exactly when you need them. If reversing visibility is the actual reason you are shopping, buy the camera as its own decision.
