Dog seat covers split into two shapes and they solve different problems.

A hammock hangs from the front headrests and the rear ones, making a fabric bathtub across the back seat. The dog cannot fall into the footwell, and nothing reaches your upholstery. It also means the dog is standing on a soft surface that shifts, which older dogs and anxious dogs hate.

A bench cover lies flat over the seat. More stable footing, easier for a dog to get on and off, and no protection for the footwell at all.

Hard bottom hammocks are the middle option and the one most people end up wanting: a rigid insert keeps the surface flat while the sides still hang. They cost more and take up boot space when stored.

The bit listings gloss over

Seat belt access. If you strap your dog in, and you should, the cover needs openings positioned for your car’s buckles. Some covers ship with reinforced slits, some expect you to cut them, and some just do not mention it. Cutting an unreinforced slit means it tears within a month.

Check the anchoring too. Headrest straps alone let the cover swing. Look for seat anchors, the plastic tabs that push into the seat crease, on all four corners.

Material

Waterproof and water resistant are used interchangeably in listings and mean different things. Water resistant is a coating that wears off. Waterproof means a bonded membrane layer. If the dog is ever wet, you want the membrane, and you can usually tell from whether the listing mentions a separate backing layer.

Scratch resistance is oxford fabric rated by denier. 600D is standard, 900D is noticeably tougher. Anything not quoting a denier is probably 300D.

Ramps

Worth it earlier than most people think. Dogs hide joint pain, and the jump down from a boot is harder on them than the jump up. Check the ramp’s rated weight against your dog with a decent margin, and check the folded length against your boot floor, because a ramp that does not fit in the car it is for gets left at home.
