Car Phone Mounts

Every phone mount is a compromise between three things: how easy it is to get the phone in one handed, how well it holds on rough roads, and whether it blocks something you need.

Magnetic mounts win on the first. A MagSafe puck grabs the phone as you bring it close and needs no aiming. They lose on hold strength once you add a thick case, because the magnets are working through more distance. If your case is not MagSafe compatible you will need a metal plate stuck to it, which then interferes with wireless charging.

Clamp mounts hold anything and survive potholes. They also need two hands and a moment of aim, which is exactly what people do while driving when they should not.

Where it attaches

Vent clips are the most popular and the most variable. They work well on horizontal blade vents and badly on round or mesh vents. They also block airflow, which matters more than it sounds in summer, and heat from the vent is not good for the phone.

Suction cups on the windscreen give the best sight line and are the most likely to fall off. Heat cycling kills the seal. A cup on a weighted dash base is more reliable than one on glass, and legal in more places, since several jurisdictions restrict windscreen mounting.

Cup holder mounts never fall and never block anything. The phone sits low, so you glance down rather than across, which is the worst position for eyes off road time.

Charging

A charging mount solves the cable clutter and adds heat. Phones throttle and batteries degrade faster when charged hot, and a black dashboard in summer is already hot. If your drives are short, a plain mount and an occasional cable is kinder to the phone.

Check the wattage honestly. Most 15W claims are 15W only for specific phones and drop to 7.5W for the rest.

What to check before buying

Phone weight with your case on. A large phone in a heavy case is around 280g, and plenty of vent clips are rated well under that. An underrated mount does not fail immediately, it sags over a few weeks until it points at your knee.
